History and Evolution

Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) launched the Window to the Arts program in 2020, responding to the isolation faced by older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, local musicians performed outside the windows of assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, bringing live music to residents at a safe distance. These performances took place in courtyards, parking lots, and gardens, and were also live-streamed to ensure accessibility for residents unable to attend in person.
Over time, Window to the Arts has grown into an innovative integrative model of care. Today, the program features a fully produced, hour long performance by professional local artist, followed by a one-hour music therapy workshop led by board-certified therapists. For residents unable to attend roup sessions due to health constraints, personalized 1:1 serenades are provided directly within a residents rooms.

Expansion

Since its inception, Window to the Arts has expanded has toured to nursing homes across Snohomish, Kitsap, and Yakima counties, reaching hundreds of nursing home residents annually to strategically reduce isolation and anxiety. By partnering with local artists and music therapists, ECA has celebrated a variety of music styles, from folk and jazz to classical and contemporary genres.
